Dance Centre Kenya Presents Westside Story

This June, one of the world’s most iconic musicals comes to life on stage in Nairobi. Set in 1950s New York City on the Upper West Side, West Side Story unfolds against a backdrop of rivalry, migration, and resilience in a rapidly changing urban landscape. Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, this powerful retelling is reimagined through electrifying dance, unforgettable music by Leonard Bernstein, and a story that continues to resonate across generations. At its heart, it is a story of love across divides. Two young people, Tony and Maria, find each other in a world shaped by conflict between the Jets and the Sharks, rival gangs representing different communities and identities in mid-century New York. What unfolds is a moving journey through identity, belonging, and the consequences of prejudice, themes that remain deeply relevant today. The dynamic choreography, originally conceived by Jerome Robbins, fuses ballet and jazz in a way that revolutionized musical theatre and continues to inspire dancers around the world. Brought to you by Dance Centre Kenya, this production showcases Nairobi’s next generation of performers young, bold, and incredibly talented artists who have dedicated months of training, rehearsals, and creative collaboration to bring this story to life.
